A Guide To Choosing Your Best Garage Door Opener

Blog

Garage door remotes will generally last about 10 to 15 years, but can last much longer if maintained properly. The key to a dependable garage door starts with a great garage remote. No matter how great your garage door is, you want to back it up with a quality remote that is tailored to meet both your and your garage door's needs. In an effort to purchase the best garage door remote, you need to understand the difference horsepower options, safety features, and the three main types available. Here are some things to consider to help you get started on your search for the perfect garage door remote.

Horsepower

Typically, you have three types of horsepower to choose from on a garage door remote. The various horsepower includes the 1/3 HP, 1/2 HP, and 3/4 HP. If you have a single car garage with a lightweight garage door, you should have no problem using the lesser horsepower. The benefit to using a garage door remote with only 1/3 HP is that it is the cheapest of the three. For a typical double door garage of medium weight, you should opt for the 1/2 HP garage door remote. If you have an oversized garage door that requires even more horsepower, you are going to want to purchase a remote with 3/4 HP. Not only does this have a lot more horsepower than the others, but it is designed to last longer as well.

Safety Features

Because garage doors are the largest opening to your home, you want to make sure they have the right safety features installed on them. Even the garage door remote may contain some safety features to help secure your door better. Many garage door remotes have wi-fi capabilities that allow you to control your garage door remote using your smartphone. This adds a whole other level of security to your home. You also want to make sure you have a battery backup to your remote so that you can still open and close your garage door even if you lose power for some reason. If you really want to make sure your home is secure, look for a garage door remote with the rolling code technology. This allows the remote to cycle through constantly so that hackers cannot steal your garage door remote code.

Garage Door Remote Type

You have three options when it comes to what type of garage door remote you want. You can choose a visor clip, a key chain, or a remote transmitter. The visor clip is a convenient way to keep up with your garage remote but if your car gets broken into, the thief will have access to your home. If you prefer the key chain remote, you want to be careful not to lose your keys or else you may not have access to your garage. The remote transmitter looks similar to a TV remote. The transmitter can be hidden in your vehicle so that it remains in a convenient location, but you want to make sure you don't lose it somewhere in the car.

Finding the Right Garage Door

When my husband and I first built our home, we had no idea which kind of garage door would blend in with the exterior facade of our place. However, after we mulled over a bunch of different options, we decided to go with a few fancy, carriage door styled garage doors. In addition to adding an old-world feel to our place, they also worked incredibly well. I know that it sounds silly, but our garage doors are one of my favorite things about our new place. I want you to love your garage doors as much as I love mine, which is why I built this website.
