Ways To Add An Insulated Garage Door To Your Home

Blog

One of the best ways to make your garage more energy efficient is by having an insulated garage door. Whether you decide to add insulation to your existing door or decide to have a new insulated door installed, this improvement can be a great way to help keep your garage and home a comfortable temperature. In addition, the insulation can also help in blocking noise as well.

Purchasing a New Insulated Garage Door

Garage doors that have insulation are often one of the best ways to help in reducing the transfer of heat in and out of the garage. Since most garages are attached to the home, this can have a tremendous impact of the temperatures in the home as well. Because of this, you may want to consider purchasing a new insulated garage door for your home. A door manufactured to include insulation generally comes in two different styles.

  • Double Layer - This type of door has two layers of metal or wood. The insulation is adhered to the inside of the doors.
  • Triple Layer - These doors have the two layers of metal or wood like the double layer door. They also have a third layer of insulation, sandwiched between the two outer layers.

Most doors manufactured to include insulation will have a stronger construction due to the extra layers.

Adding Batt Insulation to an Existing Door

If you do not wish to purchase a new door, you may want to consider adding batt insulation to your existing door. Batt insulation comes in rolls and is very flexible. This can make it easy to work with as it can be fitted into the frame of the garage door. Once the insulation is fitted to the door, tape or fasteners can be used to hold it in place. Batt insulation can be a good choice because it is generally less expensive than other types of insulation. Prices for the material can vary depending on the heat flow capabilities of the batt insulation. This is referred to as the r-factor. The higher the r-factor, the more expensive the material can be. Typically batt insulation can cost from $.20 to $6 per square foot.

Using Foam Board Insulation to Insulate the Door

Foam board insulation can also be a good option to consider. Foam board generally comes in rigid panels. It is generally not as thick as batt insulation. However, it can be more difficult to fit into the frame of the door since it must be cut a bit more precisely than batt insulation. When purchasing this type of insulation, the thicker the board is, the less heat that will be able to flow through the material. This type of insulation can range in price from $.75 to $1.45 per square foot.

Improving the insulation in your garage can be a great way to help conserve energy and reduce your energy costs. It can also make it more pleasant to be in the garage when temperatures outside are extreme.

Finding the Right Garage Door

When my husband and I first built our home, we had no idea which kind of garage door would blend in with the exterior facade of our place. However, after we mulled over a bunch of different options, we decided to go with a few fancy, carriage door styled garage doors. In addition to adding an old-world feel to our place, they also worked incredibly well. I know that it sounds silly, but our garage doors are one of my favorite things about our new place. I want you to love your garage doors as much as I love mine, which is why I built this website.
